The Spiritan family in Africa and the Islands is pleased to announce a publication by Fr Peter Githui Ndegwa, C.S.Sp., a Spiritan priest of Kenyan origin. His book, The Sensitivity of Smallholder Household Activities to Climatic Shocks: Determining Sensitivity Index of Smallholder Household Farming Activities to Climatic Shocks in Tana River County, Kenya, written with Andrew Wamukota and Annie Ong’ayo, is published by Scholars’ Press.

About the book

The study draws on questionnaires from 390 households in Tana River County to measure how sensitive rural livelihoods are to climate shocks. Households that depended on farming alone showed a sensitivity of 43.17%, and those that depended only on non-farm activities 36.40%. Where households combined the two, sensitivity fell by 21.20%. Even so, families still ranked farming as their most important livelihood (81.5%).

The authors recommend that government, together with its partners, invest in ways of adapting to climate change and in the skills people need to diversify how they earn a living.

The book speaks to the Spiritan commitment to justice, peace and the integrity of creation, and to the daily lives of the rural communities among whom many of our confrères serve, as climate change weighs ever more heavily on farming families across Africa.
