The Spiritan Conference of Circumscriptions of Africa and the Islands

Who We Are

The Spiritan Conference of Circumscriptions of Africa and the Islands (SCCAI) is the structure of cooperation among all Spiritan circumscriptions (Provinces or Groups) across the African continent and neighbouring islands — Cape Verde, Madagascar, Seychelles, Réunion, and Mauritius. SCCAI brings together Spiritan major superiors, formators, and missionaries to reflect, coordinate, and act together in a synodal way for the promotion of the Spiritan charism in Africa and the islands.

What We Do

SCCAI exists to strengthen unity and cooperation among Spiritans in Africa and the Islands. Our work focuses on:

  • Fostering communion — promoting mutual acquaintance and the sharing of experience among member circumscriptions.
  • Shared reflection — helping members think together about the challenges facing our mission as Spiritans in Africa and the Islands, and articulate common positions on key issues.
  • Promoting the Spiritan Charism — deepening solidarity and understanding among Spiritans across the region.
  • Formation — coordinating the exchange of students and staff between circumscriptions, and overseeing our Centres for Ongoing Formation.
  • Advancing Justice, Peace and Integrity of Creation — integrating this dimension into our spiritual and pastoral priorities.

How We Are Organized

SCCAI meets every two years, bringing together major superiors of member circumscriptions, with formators also invited to contribute their own reflections. The Conference is served by a Secretariat — a President, Vice-President, Executive Secretary, and Vice-Secretary — who ensure continuity, coordination, and follow-up on decisions between meetings.

Formation Centres

SCCAI supports two Centres for Ongoing Formation:

  • Bagamoyo Spiritan Centre, Tanzania (in collaboration with ICOF)
  • Brottier Centre for Mission and Spirituality (SIST), Enugu, Nigeria

These centres offer renewal and short-term formation programmes for Spiritans across Anglophone, Francophone, and Lusophone Africa.

Our Priorities for Formation

Spiritan spirituality, spiritual accompaniment, human growth and development, contemporary understanding of mission, inculturation, interreligious dialogue, and the spirituality of Justice, Peace and Integrity of Creation.
